Background
The social game Smeet fosters connections through interactive chat, dynamic challenges that blend collaboration and competition, and engaging social events. Players can enhance their experience by purchasing Coins, which allows them to acquire Premium-grade clothing, room decor, and other upgrades to personalize their journey even further and gain an edge in challenges.
Goals
A vital aspect is enhancing our user engagement and conversion by creating a frictionless buying experience that encourages spending, e.g., by the introduction of new coin bundles. The new approach introduces a more engaging and visually appealing layout while maintaining alignment with the established design guidelines.
Challenges
The focus is ensuring clarity and simplicity. All prices, conversion rates, and package benefits must be clearly presented to ensure an intuitive purchasing process, from selection to check out.
Upselling opportunities should be designed with the user in mind, ensuring transparency and trust, while also aligning with the necessary monetization goals.
The limitations set by partnering payment providers and the outdated engine present technical constraints. So it requires some ingenuity when it comes to a seamless implementation of the new coin shop features while simultaneously ensuring the continued functionality of the existing system.

Besides personas, surveys, analyzing competitors and analyzing the current user behavior, the coins shop required an in-depth research on monetization models and prizing strategies. Especially information about what price points tend to drive the most purchases or which discounts are most effective, informed some upcoming design decisions.
UX Design
The redesigned coin shop introduces features for premium members, offering the ability to purchase limited-edition items, extra spins, and special advantages in challenges. The shop’s offerings are dynamically tailored, showcasing more appealing and relevant deals for different types of players. This includes a revamped selection of bundles, featuring e.g. limited-edition items or currency packs. The new pricing strategy for these bundles is designed to provide greater value and enhance the purchasing experience.
UI Design
After evaluating the time frame, it became clear that priority needs to be Game Design, so I chose a minimalist but aesthetic art style. My design of characters, the environment, and UI elements convey empathy and respect for the characters’ stories. The mood was set through a muted, realistic color scheme.

Managing all aspects of development alone was challenging. This was worsened by a grand scope and high orientation to detail. In the future, collaborating with a larger team or delegating tasks could improve efficiency and allow for deeper focus on key areas, such as game mechanics.

While testing towards the end of development yielded valuable insights, conducting broader playtests earlier in the process could have identified usability issues and informed design adjustments sooner.

This project deepened my grasp of crafting content that is authentic and credible. I also gained a profound understanding of designing an empathetic user experience, enabling me to create interactions that resonate emotionally and meaningfully with players.
Award
The game won “Best Bachelor Project” in 2019 among all other BA projects of that mayor.
This idea has been in development for quite some time. I previously created a smaller game called Pvrty with a similar theme during a game jam, which served as an early exploration of the concept. The issue resonated deeply with me, inspiring a desire to create a more impactful and meaningful game to further explore and address it.
This project reflects my dedication to using game design as a medium for social impact, fostering empathy, and sparking critical dialogue about pressing real-world issues.
The Unseen is more than a game—it’s an invitation to reflect, connect, and see the world through a more compassionate lens.
In 2019 the project was honored with the 1st prize for “Best Bachelor Project”.

A strong first impression after downloading the game is vital, but up to this point, the First-Time User Experience was partly suboptimal and outdated. The unclear navigation and visually unengaging screens might be hindering a smooth onboarding process.

Users should have the opportunity to express themselves by personalizing avatars and choosing a unique starting home that reflects their individual style. The process needs to ensure that new users feel welcome and inspired to explore the game further. Therefore, a new feature is being added, allowing users to select their first room, which up to this point was not implemented in the game.
I want to simplify the registration flow to minimize the number of users who abandon the account setup, ensuring they are guided seamlessly into the game experience.
